These weren’t neat geometric shapes on a map, but organic territories shaped by rivers, mountains, kinship, as well as tribal allegiance. Each tuatha was a world unto itself, but linked to others through customs, laws, and ruling families. Many of whose surnames are still known to us today.

By the 10th and 11th centuries, Ireland had entered a period where many of these territories became linked to hereditary surnames, one of the earliest such traditions in Europe. The O’Neills ruled across large areas of Ulster. The McCarthys held sway in Munster, particularly Cork and Kerry. The O’Briens dominated Thomond, their power radiating from what are now counties Clare and Limerick. These weren’t just political arrangements. Here was a man who could trace his lineage back to Turlough and Rory O'Connor, the last High Kings of Ireland, and yet who welcomed us into his family home with the same gracious hospitality of any Irish host.

As Pyers led us through the rooms of Clonalis House, each space revealed another layer of Irish history. The drawing room, with its elegant Victorian furnishings, seemed almost modest until you noticed the ancient artefacts casually displayed alongside family photographs. The library was particularly breathtaking, its shelves lined with volumes that spanned centuries of Irish learning and literature. Pyers spoke knowledgeably about each piece, his passion for preservation evident in every word.

But it was when we stepped outside to see the inauguration stone, positioned just outside the front door, that the true magnitude of where we were staying hit us.

On this particular Saturday afternoon, I step through Rosie's door for what I tell myself will be a "quick cider" with a local cousin. Then, like a scene from an Irish fairy tale, in walks Jackie "Joker" Daly, a man who single-handedly made the button accordion acceptable again in Irish traditional music by rescuing it from the dusty corners to where purists had banished it. Jackie is hardly through the door when he's telling jokes to anyone who will listen, his laughter as musical as any tune he'll play. Behind him comes Matt Cranitch, fiddle maestro, carrying his instrument like a holy relic.

The gig is billed simply as "Matt Cranitch, Jackie Daly and Friends," but in this understated Irish way lies something profound. These are giants of traditional music, legends who could command concert halls and festival stages anywhere in the world. Yet here they are, setting up in the corner of a village pub where the price of admission is whatever you're drinking.

The accompanying musical friends, local players and visiting musicians drawn by the gravitational pull of such talent, all have a pint or two settling on the table in front of them. But I notice something telling: the maestros stick with water. They treat this music with the reverence of priests approaching an altar. Children wander between tables, dogs settle at their owners' feet, and conversations resume in whispered tones during the brief pauses between sets.

You have to listen to what each rod is telling you."

"This is what happens when craft serves life rather than mere commerce," Aoife explains, running her finger along the sciob's rim. "Every element has a purpose, but the maker's pride demands that purpose be expressed beautifully."

Pat Reid appears briefly from the back of the workshop, his quiet presence complementing Aoife's more animated explanations. Originally from Athy, he brings his own archaeological background to their partnership. Like Aoife, he found himself drawn to willow craft during the economic downturn of 2010, when traditional career paths suddenly seemed less certain.

"The skills transfer more than you might expect," he mentions when asked about the transition from archaeology to craft. "Both require patience, attention to detail, respect for traditional methods."

Their shared archaeological training informs their approach to willow work – they understand the historical context of what they're preserving, the cultural significance of techniques passed down through generations. But more importantly, they recognise that keeping tradition alive requires adaptation, not mere preservation.

The transition wasn't without challenges. Competing with mass-produced alternatives remains an ongoing struggle, as does educating customers about the value of handmade goods.

"People have forgotten what real quality feels like," she says, comparing one of her baskets to what you might find in a chain store. "They see similar shapes and wonder why mine costs more. But touch them both, use them both for a year, and the difference becomes obvious."

Yet despite these economic pressures, Wicklow Willow thrives. Their pieces find their way to homes where beauty and function are equally valued, where the story behind an object matters as much as its appearance. As our visit draws to a close, I find myself drawn repeatedly back to the sciob that caught my attention earlier. There's something about its marriage of function and beauty that speaks to deeper hungers – the desire for objects that serve not just practical needs but aesthetic and spiritual ones as well.

"That one wants to go home with you," Aoife says with a knowing smile. "I can tell."

She's right. The sciob represents everything I've witnessed this morning – the persistence of tradition, the marriage of beauty and utility, the irreplaceable value of human craftsmanship. But more than that, it carries the story of Irish domestic life, the countless kitchens where similar sciobs drained countless potatoes, feeding feeding Irish families for generations..

"Every time you use it – or even just see it hanging on your wall – you'll remember that someone's hands made this," Aoife says as she wraps it carefully. "In a world of anonymous objects, that connection matters."

She's absolutely right. The sciob now hangs in our kitchen, where it serves as daily reminder that the ordinary can be extraordinary, that necessity need not sacrifice beauty, that in the right hands, even the humblest materials can become art.

Her work insists that some values cannot be mechanised, some knowledge cannot be digitised, some skills cannot be outsourced.

"People ask me if I worry about willow weaving dying out," Aoife says as we gather our things. "But as long as people hunger for beauty, for connection to the natural world, for objects made with care and intention, there will always be a place for this work."

Pat nods from the background. The archaeologist in both of them understands that civilisations rise and fall, technologies come and go. But human needs remain constant – the need for beauty, for connection, for meaning. That's what craft provides.

But as we walk through that gate, the modern world falls away completely. Before us stands a landscape from the Celtic Christian imagination – ancient crosses reaching skyward like stone prayers, a weather-worn round tower standing over sacred ground, all embraced by a carpet of tombstones resting in the spring grass under the shelter of venerable trees.

The silence here has texture. It's not the absence of sound, but rather the presence of something older than noise – a quiet that seems to have gathered here since Saint Buite first walked this ground in the twilight of the 5th century. A blackbird's song punctuates the silence like illuminated letters on a manuscript page.

I realise I'm holding back my breath, as if afraid to disturb the delicate balance between now and then. When I finally exhale, it feels like a first breath in this older, slower world.

Muiredach's Cross: A Stone To Tell Stories

It draws us like a magnet – Muiredach's Cross – the finest in all Ireland. As we approach this 5.5-meter monolith, what first appeared as mere texture resolves into stories. A millennium of Irish weather has weathered but not erased these stone tales.

The sandstone surface displays biblical narratives and native mysteries, interpreted through a distinctly Hibernian lens. Here, Christ wears no crown of thorns nor expression of agony – this is not the suffering Jesus of later medieval art but a triumphant Christ of Celtic Christianity, standing before the cross rather than hanging upon it, embodying victory instead of torture.

I circle the cross slowly, letting my fingers hover an inch from its surface. The panels unfold like an ancient picture book: Adam and Eve beside the tree, Cain raising his cleaver against Abel, David confronting Goliath, Moses striking water from rock. Stories of temptation, betrayal, courage, and miracle – the eternal human drama captured in sandstone.

On the cross's base, barely legible, the ancient inscription asks for "a prayer for Muiredach, for whom this cross was made." A thousand years later, I now find myself silently offering that very prayer – for this long-dead abbot who gave us such beauty, for the nameless artisans whose hands shaped these stones, for all those seeking meaning across the centuries.
